North Idaho educator and author to appear Aug. 17
Marianne Love to give reading and book signing at Auntie’s
Books in Spokane, Wash.

SPOKANE-Auntie’s Bookstore, 402 W. Main in Spokane, Wash.,
hosts retired North Idaho educator and author Marianne Love
for a reading of her new memoir Lessons with Love: Tales of
teaching and learning in a small-town high school on Friday,
Aug. 17 at 7:30 p.m. The author will do a book signing
following the reading. The program is free and open to the
public.

Love, a former teacher at Sandpoint High School in
Sandpoint, Idaho, reflects back on her 33-year teaching
career, during which she taught an estimated 4,500 students.
Lessons with Love tells of experiences from Love’s three
decades in the classroom, as a teacher and as a student
herself growing up in Sandpoint. The humorous, yet often
touching memoir candidly recalls experiences she accumulated
as a high school teacher, from the good, the bad - and the
funny, as anyone might guess from her first two books,
Pocket Girdles and Other Confessions of a Northwest
Farmgirl, memories from her rural childhood, and Postcards
from Potato(e) Land, a continued portrait of life in
Sandpoint.

Lessons with Love is more than just a memoir, though. It’s
also a meditation on teaching, in which she learns her own
lessons in a profession that can so profoundly shape the
lives of young people. Love’s dedication to her career and
to her students shines through in her reminiscences, and in
the continued relationships she has with numerous past
students. “Don’t let classroom experiences or judgments
cloud your thoughts about a student’s future,” Love advises
future teachers. “You may be surprised.”

In addition to the observations and advice from her life in
teaching, Love concludes the memoir with her top 10 teaching
memories. Idaho Press-Tribune journalist William Love,
Marianne’s son - and former student - contributes a chapter
loaded with his own words of wisdom, as the son of a
teacher.

A graduate of the University of Idaho, Love has written for
the Pacific Northwest Inlander, Spokane’s Spokesman-Review,
the Idaho Register, North Idaho Sunday, the Spokane Daily
Chronicle and the Sandpoint News Bulletin. Her work
currently appears regularly in the Appaloosa Journal,
Spokesman-Review, The River Journal and Sandpoint Magazine.

signing, contact Lois Hughes at Auntie’s Bookstore, (509)

Welcome to Lessons with Love

I decided to create a blog in hopes of gaining wider exposure for my most recent book,
Lessons with Love: Tales of teaching and learning a small-town high school. As you can see by checking at (www.keokeebooks.com), this book chronicles (loosely) my 33-year teaching career at Sandpoint High School.

It's a collection of funny, poignant and brutally honest stories about teaching in a rural high school in Sandpoint, Idaho. The Keokee site offers a list of chapter titles and a selection from the book.

I'm honored to report that, in addition to some of my students, television personality/speechwriter, and college professor Ben Stein has endorsed the book. Ben, who loves visiting Sandpoint, actually visited my class and Sandpoint High School one day with his son Tommy. Tommy may even remember the squirt gun toilet I gave him that day. I wonder where it is now. It was given to me by a student Nicole Huguenin, who is now a fine elementary teacher herself.

I'll post on this from time to time and may even include a few excerpts from the book. If you should pass by this blog, I encourage you to visit the Keokee website, learn more about the book and give it a try. And, if you like what you read (which many have already indicated), please pass the word. As a relative nobody, who thinks she has a pretty good book to offer, I appreciate any grassroots attempt to get the word out.

Also, if you're a teacher, post a comment, and we can discuss teaching.

Finally, if there's interest in my first two humorous books (Pocket Girdles --- Postcards from Potato Land) you can read about them at my webpage: (www.mariannelove.com). They're also available through www.keokeebooks.com

Thank you.

Marianne
